How to port a landline number to Ooma without losing it

The safe order of operations

Set up Ooma, request the number transfer, keep the existing phone service active, and cancel only after Ooma confirms the port is complete. Cancelling early can release the number and disrupt the transfer.

Before submitting the request

1. Check that Ooma can port the number.
2. Set up and activate the Ooma device with a temporary number.
3. Find a recent bill from the current provider.
4. Confirm the account holder's name, service address, account number, and any required PIN.
5. Resolve freezes, past-due balances, or account changes that could delay the request.

The information on the transfer request should match the existing provider's records. Even a mismatch in the service address or account name can cause a rejection.

How long should you allow?

Ooma's current support pages quote different typical windows: one says 7–10 business days, while other Ooma pages advise roughly 3–4 weeks. Treat those as estimates, allow several weeks, and wait for the completion notice before changing the old account.

What happens while you wait?

Keep receiving calls on the old line. Ooma can be tested with its temporary number, which lets you check the handset, call quality, voicemail, and network setup before the permanent number moves.

Check for services tied to the old line

• DSL internet bundled with the phone service
• Alarm, gate, fax, elevator, or medical-alert equipment
• Distinctive ring or secondary numbers
• Discounts that disappear when the phone line is removed

Do not assume an internet-based phone service is compatible with life-safety or monitoring equipment. Verify directly with that equipment's provider.

After Ooma confirms completion

1. Call the ported number from a mobile phone.
2. Place an outgoing call and confirm the correct caller ID.
3. Check voicemail and any call-forwarding rules.
4. Confirm that the emergency-service address in the Ooma account is current.
5. Only then contact the former provider about any remaining service or final bill.
